What to Expect at Drummoyne PS

DPS Kindergarten 2027 Orientation Program

Kindergarten Information Evening

Tuesday 19th May 6pm-7pm

If you're considering enrolling your child at Drummoyne Public School, we invite you to participate in our Kindergarten informarmation evening, hosted once a year by our school Principal, Mr John Nguyen. This event is specifically to help families with the enrolment application process and/or gather more information about our school. We welcome families to this session who may still be considering whether DPS is the right fit for their family, regardless of whether they have submitted an application for enrolment.

We understand starting school is exciting and daunting, for families as well as students. Our information evening aims to provide families the confidence, in feeling informed about the start of the school journey. The session will cover information such as what the first year of school looks like; the school's programs, values and expectations; introduction to our teachers and facilities. In addition, we will guide families new to starting school life, through how to prepare their child for starting big school. This includes school readiness skills, daily routines, social skills and what the schools transition program later in the year looks like.

The session will conclude with dedicated time to ask questions and ensure families leave feeling confident and excited about their in the future at DPS.

Kindy Orientation Sessions

Enrolled students and parents/carers will be invited to spend the following mornings in Kindergarten at DPS.

Children will be accompanied by teachers and introduced to classrooms and fellow future kindy students. Children will participate in structured activities involving play, craft, stories and songs. Uniforms, food and drink are not necessary at these sessions.

Whilst students have fun getting to know school, parents are invited to stay and attend informative workshops that will be held in the hall.

Additional information regarding arrival and sign in will be sent to families via email.

What to Expect in Kindergarten

Learning and Development

Kindergarten follows the NSW curriculum. Children build early skills in literacy, numeracy, creative arts, health and physical activity, science and technology. Learning through play also supports social, emotional and academic growth.

Daily Routines

Kindergarten is all about learning daily school routines, such as morning arrival, snack and lunch breaks, lining up, using bubblers and moving safely around the school. Teachers guide children as they settle in, but practising at home helps.

You can learn more about our school's routine here.

Best Start Assessment

At the start of the year, all Kindergarten children take part in the Best Start Assessment.

This is a friendly, one-on-one activity where teachers learn about your child’s literacy and numeracy skills.

The assessment will take 30-40 minutes and will be conducted by a teacher on site at the school. Best Start is not a test and needs no preparation.
